What is the history behind Pancake Tuesday?
Pancake Day is a feast day immediately before Lent, which is celebrated in the United Kingdom and parts of the Commonwealth. In France and the US they celebrate Mardi Gras or “Fat Tuesday” on this day.
How do you make pancakes?
To make perfect pancakes, you will need:
- 225g of organic wheat self-raising flour
- 1 tbsp of golden syrup
- 250ml of milk
- A large free-range egg
- Salted butter for cooking
- Strawberries, raspberries or blueberries for toppings.
(where possible, make the batter a few hours early and leave it to set in the fridge)
- In a bowl, whisk all the ingredients together, until the batter is smooth.
- Put a frying pan on a medium heat, adding a small knob of butter, so the pan is has a thin coating of grease.
- Add some batter to the pan with a ladle. When bubbles start to form on the pancake’s surface it is ready to be flipped over!
- Continue to cook the pancake until it is golden brown on the underside.
